United Utilities first set out its Carbon Management Strategy in 2007. Since then, there have been changes in the internal and external landscape affecting the appropriateness of the original strategy. So we have extensively reviewed our carbon strategy and during the last year have approved a number of revisions.
Our revised carbon strategy aims are to:
- reduce gross emissions by 21% by 2015 on our 2005/2006 baseline
- halve emissions by 2035 based on 2005/2006 baseline (the year for which we have the most reliable, accurate and complete data)
- influence external stakeholders to enable us to meet our aims
- make carbon integral to the way we do business
External engagement
We continue to promote support for carbon reduction through membership of industry bodies and engaging with policy makers and regulators. This demonstrates our commitment to promoting responsible business practice to others.
These organisations include:
We continue to promote carbon mitigation through our supply chain.
Internal engagement
We aim to make carbon an integral part of our company thinking.
Tools: We have made significant progress in embedding carbon into decision making and processes through our in-house developed suite of Carbon and Sustainability Estimating (CASE) tools.
CRC scheme: One of our key focus areas during the last year has been preparing for the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC), which commenced on April 1st 2010. We are seeking out energy efficiency opportunities to influence our performance. To do this we have formed a dedicated group of representatives from across the organisation.
